Trilateral Energy Security Committee

A Global Partnership for Energy Security

In today's geopolitical climate, energy security is more important than ever. The Hamm Institute for American Energy at Oklahoma State University (OSU) is committed to strengthening energy security for the U.S. and its allies.

That's why South Korea's largest energy company, SK Energy, asked the institute to tackle pressing energy security issues that our allies face in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically Korea and Japan. Given the complexity of these challenges, the Hamm Institute reached out to OSU Global, which is uniquely qualified with experts in international policy and market forces, to lead the Trilateral Energy Security Committee (TESC) project.

Energy security is particularly urgent for countries like South Korea and Japan, which depend heavily on imported energy. Their geographic location and volatile energy markets make them vulnerable to disruptions caused by geopolitical conflicts, environmental issues, or policy changes. These fragile energy supply chains can trigger far-reaching consequences, from economic turmoil to national security concerns.

The TESC research team, which includes experts like Dr. John Schoeneman and specialists from the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), is taking a multi-phase approach. They are crafting policy recommendations that balance energy security with carbon reduction targets using advanced data modeling, machine learning, and qualitative interviews.

Initial results emphasize the importance of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a key energy source while exploring next-generation technologies like hydrogen, ammonia, and SMRs. These advancements hold promise for strengthening energy security, with the U.S. playing a critical role in technology development and infrastructure support.

This initiative is a vital step in protecting economic stability and national security for the U.S. and its allies. The collaboration between the Hamm Institute, OSU Global, and their international counterparts demonstrates how partnership and shared expertise can address complex global challenges. Together, they are paving the way for a more secure, sustainable, and prosperous future, not just for the U.S. and its allies but for the global community.
